Grey Hat Hackers

Grey hat hackers are a blend of both black hat and white hat hackers. They perform the hacking activity not with any illegal intention but for fun. They hack the security credentials in a computer system or a computer network without the knowledge or permission of the owner.

They intend to make the owner aware of the weakness and get the appreciation from the owner. [1]

What are the different types of Hackers?

Hackers are categorized differently such as white hat, black hat, and grey hat, based on their intent of hacking a system. These terms are derived from old Spaghetti Westerns, where a black cowboy hat is worn by a bad guy and white hat is worn by good guy.

Black Hat Hackers

Black Hat hackers, also known as crackers, hack to get an unauthorized access to a system and its operation and harm and steal the sensitive information.

Black Hat hacking is always illegal as its intention is bad and which includes stealing corporate data, violating privacy, damaging the system, blocking network communication, etc.

White Hat Hackers

Ethical Hackers are known as White Hat hackers. They try to identify the probable weakness in a computer system or a computer network as a part of testing process and vulnerability assessments.

Ethical hacking is legal hacking and is one of the most demanding career in IT industry. Ethical hackers are hired by numerous companies to penetrate testing and vulnerability assessments.

Miscellaneous Hackers

Some other categories of hackers also exist based on what they hack and how they hack.

Red Hat Hackers

Red hat hackers are a blend of both black hat and white hat hackers. They usually hack government agencies, top-secret information hubs, and generally anything that falls under the category of sensitive information.

Blue Hat Hackers

Blue Hat Hackers are the consulting firms who hack to perform a bug-test to a system prior to its launch. They identify the loopholes and try to close the gaps. Microsoft uses the term BlueHat to represent a series of security briefing events.

Elite Hackers

This is a social status among hackers, which is used to describe the most skilled. Newly discovered exploits will circulate among these hackers.

Script Kiddie

A script kiddie is a hacker who is not an expert and uses the pre-packaged tools which are written by others to break into a computer system. They usually have a little knowledge about the concept and hence termed as Kiddie.


A neophyte, "n00b", or "newbie" or "Green Hat Hacker" is someone who is new to hacking or phreaking and has almost no knowledge or experience of the workings of technology and hacking.


A hacktivist is a hacker who utilizes technology to announce a social, ideological, religious, or political message. Usually Hacktivism contains defacement of the website or denial of the service attacks.
